Walking safety tips
- Walk on the sidewalk: Always use the sidewalk when available. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic to avoid cars pulling up behind you.
- Use the crosswalk: Always cross at corners or at a marked crosswalk where drivers expect you. Look for cars coming from all directions before entering the street.
- Make eye contact: Don't assume drivers see you. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping off the sidewalk.
- Be seen and alert: Walk in a well-lit and populated area. Be aware of your surroundings and any possible threats. If you see something suspicious, report it.
- Keep your hands free: While walking, avoid distractions such as texting, making phone calls, and listening to loud audio.
- Bring company: Invite coworkers, family, and friends to accompany you on your walk.
- Take along personal protective equipment: Learn how to use pepper spray and sound bombs and keep handy when walking.
- Protect your person: Hand over your property if you are being threatened for it.
- Call 911 to report suspicious behavior.
